Thought of the Day: My blogging about autistic anime fandom was relevant all along?

clannad-02

Months ago, someone told me that they found a substantial section on anime in a guide to teaching autistic children.  Of all places, I wondered, why there?  As it turns out, many autistic children like anime because the facial expressions and gestures are easy to understand.  For people with autism, who normally have immense trouble reading the emotions of others, anime characters are a way for them to participate in a social arena that the rest of us hardly think about.2-D Teleidoscope

So basically, if you’ve read my blog long enough, you would have figured out why my blog’s URL is “aspergers.dasaku.net”. Some find the URL off-putting, but it’s part of who I am and how I blog. I started this anime blog hoping to raise better awareness of autism and anime fandom, respectively. 2-D Teleidoscope did a wonderful post quoted from above, which pretty much sums up why I wanted to blog anime through the lens of my disability in the first place: anime characters express their emotions in a way that’s a lot easier for me to interpret, and the Japanese doctor on a Studio Ghibli blog way back when (I’ve lost the link long ago because the blog was a wall of text) that conducted a study involving anime and autistic children who inspired my blog’s genesis has had his name sadly forgotten, but my blog’s still here.
