This response here manages to sum it up neatly without me having to step my foot into the ring, but what else does the problematic label of “comics” and “manga” cause for us in recognising regional graphic artforms?
This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. What is it about comics and manga that are forever opposed to one another? Manga fans say their favourite graphic literature is neglected, whereas Western comics fans say that their own artforms should be recognised in their own right. So what can be done to avoid this?
Firstly, transparency in what gets on the best comics or manga lists needs to have taken place. This whole thing could have been avoided if two lists, one for comics, and one for manga was made. But even then, the hegemony of American comics that overshadows European comics and other parts of Asia which don’t always create manga-inspired works… it’s troubling. Especially in Australia where our own graphic novels are mostly very niche and don’t get a widespread acceptance overseas.
What do you think should have been done about The Onion’s Best of 00’s Comics List and why?
