Get Thee to a Sociology, Baka-Raptor

Roy Mustang not manly enough for you Baka-Raptor? Perhaps a crash course in sociology will help.

Baka-Raptor’s post makes some interesting assumptions about masculinity, mainly that muscly heroes who exhibit hyper-masculine traits are superior to what he regards as “generic harem leads” like Roy Mustang, who he believes only gets the girls (and fangirls) because he is rich. He further states that big breasted Anime characters are superior to flat chested ones, exhibiting his state of forcing idealised standards onto women whether fictional or real.

Baka-Raptor has long been a bastion against elitism in the Aniblogosphere, and for that he should be respected. But also take into account that his views are influenced by Maddox, which in turn effects his statements about gender roles and values.

But hear me out Baka-Raptor, I’m not attacking you. Sociology is your friend that enables you to understand other cultures, even your own identity in the late modernity muddle that is the 21st Century world!

For example, Baka-Raptor, a sociological reading of Detroit Metal City (which you love so much) reveals that the lead character has to put on a gender performance of hegemonic masculinity in order to be accepted by the hegemony, whereas his sensitive side gets him rejected and his masculinity is challenged by the hegemonic masculinity of the metal music scene. There’s more to Krauser-san than “ten rapes per second”. He’s not just pulling off extremely intense guitar performances, but socially constructed gender performances which affect how he behaves in society and his culture.

Using that as a springboard, reading up on Anthony Giddens and other sociologists such as Foucault allows a more balanced and orderly reading practice of texts such as Anime shows.

Baka-raptor needs to act like Baka-raptor and less like Maddox. It’s great to have ‘anti elitist’ anime bloggers who are funny, but the Maddox idolising is holding him back a bit. His blog is still LOL though.

There’s a lot of underlying food for thought in DMC, but the social commentary in regards to the music industry is what got me hooked. It’s not so much Krauser’s exaggerated masculinity per se, but the extreme nature of the fabricated image he has to maintain in general which is what makes it so funny, I think.

I wholly support this theory myself.
